My birthday is yet another occasion I’m meant to celebrate. Plenty of other dates have greater meaning

Yesterday it was my birthday, so obviously I ran away. My friend lent me her cottage, hidden up a dirt track, shy behind a high hedge with a bedroom view of sheep-dotted hills. Here, the kids brought me a breakfast of three fried eggs with mint choc chip ice cream, raspberries and a slab of chocolate. They sat close and watched to make sure I ate it.

Normally I have as complicated a relationship with my birthday as I do with all anniversaries. I pretty much hate them. And at this time of year they run in a streak: Christmas, New Year, birthday, Valentine’s Day.

A memorable childhood birthday was my sixth when, struck with a virus, I vomited across the kitchen floor and the whole thing was cancelled. From eight on they occurred during term-time at boarding school. Cards arrived at breakfast. At tea my friends banded around a cake encased in pink fondant. Literally encased. We convulsed in a collective sugar high and then went to bed. (All pupils had the same routine).

Since then they’ve been marked mostly with ambivalence. For a while I had a friend who celebrated her own birthday on mine (though hers was three days later). “I’ll get you a cake,” she’d say to entice me to come over. And then wouldn’t. “Oh, it’s her birthday too!” She’d remember as everyone put on coats. Actually, I didn’t mind. I was happy to avoid the date. Jesus, if I were to have a party, it would never be on the inauspicious day itself.

My favourite Christmases were those that were non-Christmases — those when I volunteered to work, or the one I had eating Chinese food on a beach in Bahia Brazil, or in the Middle East where it passed blessedly unnoticed. All the best New Year’s Eves I was asleep before midnight.

What is it about dates, though? There’s the pressure, obviously, the sense that everything should be perfect, a heightened anticipation that too often precipitates disappointment — or crisis. Dates are a wormhole too: instant access to intense emotion from the past — good and bad. We all have dates that are joyous — my children’s birthdays are three.

December 19 is love, for me. Others I recall with agony (June 11) or with grief (August 30: my cousin was killed in a motorbike accident aged 22).

Stir Up Sunday is a tradition that dates back to the Victorian times and refers to the last Sunday before the season of Advent. Historically a family would gather together to stir the Christmas pudding five weeks before Christmas.

These leaves are known to absorb negative vibes and hence are best suited to protect your home from evil eyes.

Lakshmi feet

It is a ritual to make or stick Lakshmi feet (per) stickers at the entrance of your house in order to seek blessings of the goddess. This ensures growth in wealth and prosperity of the house. By making these feet we also attract the attention of the gods and goddesses and it also reduces the ill effects of planetary movements.

Swastik is important

Making swastik at the entrance of the house is considered auspicious, it brings luck and prosperity. Swastik also reduces disease and mourning, and increases happiness and prosperity.

If your house has a larger entrance door than the other doors in the house, it is considered auspicious. And if the door opens clockwise, it is reduces negative energy. Keep the height of the door from the ground in order to allow light to enter the house.

9-year-old donates birthday gifts to Toys for Tots

Sophia Burns donated nearly 50 of her toys to a good cause.
"We're a giving not receiving family," Burns said. "This is all toys donated for Toys for Tots."
The Saginaw Township Fire Department's annual Toys for Tots asks for new and unwrapped toys in exchange for a free ride on the fire truck, but as part of a family that values generosity, that's not why Sophia is offering her toys up.
"First, we were going to do Adopt A Family, but that didn't really sound fun for the kids. Then, my mom, Shanna Burns, she brought up Toys for Tots, and I said sure because I have too much toys, and I don't need any more," Burns said.
Shanna Burns said her daughter said something that really hit home for her, leaving her feeling inspired.
"What hit me harder at the most when I actually realized that she knew exactly what she was doing was the next morning, she looked at all the gifts and toys and said, 'This is going to make kids happy for Christmas this year,'" she said.
Shanna Burns said she plans on making this a yearly tradition and hopes other families are inspired to do the same if they feel the calling.

5 unique gifts you can give your partner this season

How often do we find ourselves pondering over what gifts to give our partners? Be it a birthday gift or an anniversary gift, the struggle is real. Showering your partner with gifts online doesn’t need an occasion, but just the right amount of thoughtfulness, and of course, some love! Here are some ideas you may want to consider if you hit the roadblock next time:

Idea #1: A Kindle for a reader
If your SO is a bookworm, what better gift for him than a kindle. You may, however, want to ascertain if your partner enjoys paperback over eBooks. Buying some of his favourite books or striking off some of the ‘to-read’ lists off his agenda can be very endearing and will show how thoughtful you are in his interests.

Idea #2: Beer bottle cap map
If you got 99 problems and beer tends to solve almost all of them, then its time get creative with your problem-solver! If you share your love for beer with your partner, then it is a great and creative idea to gift for her or gift for your partner a beer bottle cap map. Get it custom-designed or his fave pattern or picture, in any case, he's going to love it! This also makes for an amazing wall décor and will also remind you and your partners of all the times you’ve had beer together and the stories behind those!

Idea #3: Chopping board
gifts

If your SO loves spending time in the kitchen to wow you with culinary delights, don’t waste any time in wondering about what best you can give your chef partner. For a partner who enjoys cooking, creative chopping board may work wonders – it could either have a quote inscribed, or a picture of his/her favourite food or a board in the shape of a beer mug or a pitcher or better even, a chef’s knife!

Idea #4: Paw print
For your pet lover bae, you can cast your partner’s pet dog or cat’s paws into a print kit that’s sourced from a trusted manufacturer. You can also opt for some DIY ideas using flour, child-safe paints which are washable, non-toxic and are good alternatives if you don’t find a kit online. You are surely going to win extra brownie points for creating a memory more than just a gift!

Idea #5: A mix tape or an LP record
gifts
In this digital era where you can get to hear songs at the command of your voice or just by plain search on apps or browsers, it's endearing to hold on to your vintage roots. Almost all of us have grown up listening to music played on tape-recorders and heavy stereo sets. You can create a playlist of all your favourite jams together and create a mixtape or do the same on an LP record to give that vintage effect. You may personalise the records with your partner’s name and hang it up on the wall as a frame or utilise it, whatever suits!
