A new report from ServiceMarket, a UAE-based online home services marketplace, found the average international shipping cost for a two-bedroom apartment ranged from a low of Dh10,000 to relocate your belongings to Egypt to a high of Dh22,000 to the US.

“Since there are so many international movers and packers in the UAE, and the quality and range of services varies from company to company, you shouldn’t just go with the cheapest or the first option you come across,” says Bana Shomali, founder and chief executive of ServiceMarket.

While it is important to get comparison quotes from a few moving companies, the initial filter is key, including checking international accreditation, looking at the company’s experience and reading reviews. Purchasing insurance, being aware of custom charges and making wise packing decisions can also help save headaches and additional costs.

Choose an internationally accredited company

“It basically means the company is following all the international moving industry standards first and the company is financially stable,” says Chirantan Joshi, managing director of Fidi-accredited E-Movers, which has been operating in the UAE since 2003.

For example, “we don’t come into your building and damage a third party property and you end up paying for it,” says Mr Joshi. “We actually cover the third party liability, because it’s part of our certification.”

There are only three accredited companies in Abu Dhabi and 10 in Dubai, according to the Fidi website. These include Delight International Movers and Gulf Agency Company in Abu Dhabi and AFL Relocations and Dasa International Movers in Dubai, as well as Allied Pickfords in both emirates.

Using a Fidi-accredited mover does come at a higher cost — about 10 to 15 per cent more expensive than another company in the “organised sector” and even higher when compared to the “unorganised sector”, says Mr Joshi. But he says customers should be wary of discounts that might mean companies are cutting costs elsewhere.

“Everybody is earning 10 per cent. Nobody compromises on their margin. The moment they give a discount, that means they are compromising on the cost,” Mr Joshi says.

While Fidi is the most important accreditation to look for, other organisations also accredit international moving companies, says Ms Shomali. These include the International Association of Movers, the British Association of Removers, the American Moving and Storage Association, the Canadian Association of Movers and the International Air Transport Association.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport introduces FASTag Car Park facility

India’s first FASTag Car Park, which enables quick entry and exit from parking spots, has been launched at the GMR led Hyderabad International Airport.

In collaboration with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), dedicated lanes have been created at the entry and exit points at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Shamshabad. It will ensure zero wait time, claims a GMR statement.

Initially, the facility has been launched with ICICI FASTag. It will be rolled out through other banks gradually. Passengers and visitors will be able to experience this new feature, which is in line with the Government’s mission “ One nation One Tag=FASTag”, and signature programme of “Passenger is Prime”.


The new parking system provides for hassle free and quick movement in the parking zone and promotes environment sustainability too, says SGK Kishore, CEO of the Airport.

Non FASTag vehicles will continue to use the existing parking system.

The FASTag solution is based on a simple to use, reloadable electronic RFID tag which enables automatic deduction of applicable parking charges, while one drives through the car Park without stopping for any cash transaction.

This automated system entails a customer buying the FASTag, which is linked to a prepaid account. The tag employs Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) technology and needs to be affixed on the vehicle's windscreen after the tag account is active.

The RFID Tag is mapped with NPCI by the issuer bank(s). The subscriber of this system can use the parking without any manual intervention, such as waiting for a parking receipt at the entry or making cash/credit card payment at the exit. There is no additional cost to customers with respect to the parking fee. One has to just purchase a onetime tag which does away with the wait time at entry and exit. Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto trains to implement new catering tariff from March

Mail, express trains to implement new rates immediately

The Indian Railways' revised catering tariff will be effective from March 29, 2020, on the Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains. However, the revised prices will come into effect immediately on mail/ express trains, an official statement from the Railways said on Friday.

The revised catering tariff will raise the total ticket fare on pre-paid trains by 3-9 per cent for passengers who opt for meals, the release said.

IRCTC would progressively introduce bio-degradable packaging material and have QR codes on its meals so that they can be tracked and traced.

The delay in introducing higher food prices is because train tickets are booked almost four months in advance, and a number of people pay for their food in advance, while booking their tickets.

More to tickle the taste buds

The Railways has also widened the variety of food available by adding biryani to the menu.

On the Rajdhani Express, Duranto Express and Shatabdi Express trains, passengers in the 2-tier AC, 3-tier AC and Chair Car, who form the largest chunk of AC passengers, will have to shell out Rs 10 more for tea and Rs 60 more for lunch and dinner.

On popular demand, passengers on mail and express trains will be able to order biryani (vegetable, egg and chicken) for Rs 80 to Rs 110.

The sale of snacks such as samosa and pakoda may continue on the mail and express trains, the Indian Railways has said.

Passengers on mail and express trains will continue to get the Janta meal, comprising seven poories, aloo curry and pickle, for Rs 20.

According to the Railways, IRCTC will not get to decide the menu of catering services on the Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duranto trains any more. However, it will be responsible for making available cleaner, better quality food and reducing complaints in catering services.

IRCTC, the Railways PSU that was recently listed, will also ensure that quantity and quality are in line with the tariff and no undue benefit is passed on to the “service provider”.

About 12 lakh meals are served every day and 24,000-25,000 meals are booked through e-catering, according to an IRCTC source.

The number of meals served excludes the food bought from unorganised vendors selling tea, coffee, idli, dosa, mudhi-mixture, chips and cold drinks, among others. Many people also carry their own food with them.

UrbanClap heads to Dubai; will offer 5 services

UrbanClap sets 2-year target to become profitable

Co-founder Abhiraj Bhal rules out expansion into Tier-2 cities, says markets not ready, yet
Four-year-old home services start-up UrbanClap is venturing into Dubai. It will be launching operations in the UAE’s most populous city this month.

The mobile marketplace for local services, which is present in all the major metros in India, has chosen to expand to Dubai before looking at tier-2 cities in India.

“We don’t see it as an international expansion but a strategic entry into a global city that is close to India,” says Abhiraj Bhal, co-founder, UrbanClap, revealing that the team is already in place and technology work has been going on for the last four months.


UrbanClap will launch operations in Dubai with about a hundred service professionals on its platform, and, to begin with, will offer five services: laundry, home cleaning, handymen, packers and movers in India, and home painting.

Bhal says that with nine million people, 80 cent of whom are expatriates, Dubai is a lucrative dollar market where service prices are three- four times that of India’s even as costs are more or less the same. Also, there is a large pool of service professionals available who are not yet online, so there is an opportunity for a platform such as UrbanClap.

The start-up has so far received a total of $60 million (roughly ₹400 crore) in funding, and offers 30-40 services across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata. It has nearly 1 lakh service professionals registered on its platform.

After Dubai, it will look at expanding into Jaipur and Chandigarh, but Bhal rules out any plans to get into tier 2 cities immediately. “We have debated often about expanding into tier-2 cities but feel the markets are not ready.”

UrbanClap’s Series C funding last year was led by Dubai-based Vy Investor. Did this influence its decision to enter the city? Bhal says no. “We had plans to get into Dubai even before the investor came on board.” At first UrbanClap tried to enter inorganically by buying a company. “One of the talks went some distance as well, but then we felt it was more sensible to enter organically,” he says.

Cities and services

According to Bhal, each city in India has proved to be unique in terms of its demand for services and the quality. For instance, beauty care at home is popular in Kolkata but does not in Chennai. “Perhaps it is to do with the penetration of salons,” says Bhal.

AC maintenance and repairs are in high demand in Delhi and Hyderabad but not in Bengaluru or Pune.

As for Dubai, the expectation is that packers and movers and home painting services will gain great traction given the constant expat movement.
